Plan for the Heat

For many people, warm weather is a time for fun-filled outdoor activities. However, hot weather and outdoor activities don't always mix well, especially during periods of extreme heat— times when temperatures are substantially hotter and/or more humid than average for a location and date.

When temperatures are extremely high, take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones:

  • Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can.
  • Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully.
    • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
    • Pace yourself.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
  • Never leave children or pets in cars.
  • Check the local news for health and safety updates.

Know Your "A, B, C's" of Diabetes

FDIHB's Just Move It theme is "Know your ABC's of Diabetes".

  • "A" is for A1C. It is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar level over the past 3 months. Monitoring and controlling your blood sugar levels can help prevent the complications of diabetes.
  • "B" is for blood pressure. The higher your blood pressure, the harder your heart has to work.
  • "C" stands for cholesterol. High cholesterol can cause a buildup in our blood vessels, called plaque. Plaque makes it harder for blood to flow through our body and increases the risk of heart disease.

The "ABC's" memory tool reminds us to track and manage these levels to stay healthy. Learn more about these levels by attending the Just Move It series.
