Measles spreads by direct contact with an infected person or through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. A person with measles can give the disease to other people even before they feel sick. Approximately 90 percent of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed to measles may become infected.
Measles can cause serious illness, especially in young children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. Measles is preventable with two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, typically given during childhood. The MMR vaccine is available at our facilities, and we encourage everyone to ensure they have had 2 doses (the first at 12 months and the second at age 4) to stay protected.
What to do if you were at the specified location on the date and time of exposure:
Make sure you are up to date with the recommended number of measles (MMR) vaccinations. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most effective way to avoid contracting measles. If you have not received the MMR vaccine or are unsure of your vaccination status, please contact your local health provider. Babies under 12 months of age do not have a mature enough immune system to be vaccinated against measles, so it is essential to ensure that anyone who will be interacting with them has received the MMR vaccine. Anyone who may have been exposed should watch for symptoms. The
symptoms of measles generally appear about 7-21 days after a person is exposed, and include:
o High fever (> 101°F)
o Cough
o Feeling run down, achy(malaise)
o Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
o Runny nose
o Blotchy rash that usually starts on the face (starting at the hairline), extends down the body and can involve palms and soles
What to do if you develop symptoms:
- Individuals who develop any symptoms of measles should self-isolate, stay away from others and seek medical care.
- People with measles symptoms should first call their healthcare provider or medical facility before going in so they can receive instructions to prevent exposing others.
If you have any of these symptoms and plan to come to Tséhootsooí Medical Center or Nahata Dziil Health Center, we ask that you:
1. Remain in your vehicle and call:
a. Tséhootsooí Medical Center: 928-729-8000. Call anytime, 24/7.
b. Nahata' Dziil Health Center: 928-688-5622. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am to 5pm
Healthcare providers are encouraged to be alert for unvaccinated patients with fever and rash, especially if they have a known exposure. Healthcare providers are required to report suspected cases of measles to their local health department.
These actions of additional health screening are in response to reported confirmed measles cases in New Mexico and Arizona.
